Time plays a crucial part in Kindred. At the time the book was written, slavery had been abolished in the United States, but oppression was still an incredible issue. Time travel allowed Butler to challenge the "free" life of an African American woman. When the story begins Kevin is a loving husband, but after Dana's first trip to the past, Kevin appears more and more oppressive. Later when Dana and Kevin are both stuck in the past Dana states that it was unsettling how easy the two of them fit into this time period, asserting that even though the oppression looks different now, it is still the same as it was 200 years ago.
