Theories of Learning
Operant Conditioning
-
REMEMBER: it is concerned with 'shaped' actions that are reinforced with trial and error to strengthen the S-R bond (stimuli-response)
-
-
-
ADS: desired responses occur quickly, immediate feedback
DISADS: lack of performer's understanding (no explanations), trial and error can lead to wrong technique being picked up, performer may be confused when stimuli change, beginners demotivated with negative/ punishment
Observational Learning
1) Attention
-
Coach can aid this by: identifying cues, explaining why skill is being taught, ensuring technique is correct, skill is easily seen in demonstration
REMEMBER: people learn best by observing others - a 'vicarious experience' from a Significant Other (SO)
-
3) Motor Reproduction
-
lots of praise given if correct, progress from easy to hard tasks slowly
4) Motivation
-
external, tangible rewards given to beginners
