I tried to keep quiet but my ancestors wouldn’t let me. Māori Speech Competition
Māori Speech Competition
Ancestors: Grandparents, Great Grandparents : My Grandad, Connection
Iwi, Wharenui
Ngāpuhi, Mokonuiarangi
Had a connection with my Grandad : Māori
Reminded me of who I am
Where I come from, my background
I believed I wasn't "Māori enough"
Didn't look the part - not dark enough - Didn't have the accent
Stop this cutting off of, not Māori enough, not dark enough : main reason are culture is being swept away
People are too afraid to step up, learn the language. I was one of those people
Māori culture
I tried to ignore the Māori part of me
Don't know how to speak the language
Would like to learn: Be closer to my culture and identity
Māori people had their identity stripped from them: Grandfather was told not to speak it at school
"Only 3.7 New Zealanders can speak Te Reo Māori and the number is falling" - marama davidson
My ancestors didn't live the way they did?
... just for me to forget who I am, where I come form
Hone Marena Kaihe
Constant "You're Māori??
Don't "look the part" "you don't look Māori?"
Māori are more than, Tā moko's, extremely dark skin and the iconic "Māori accent
"
??
Māori comes from within, it is apart of my belonging, not facial construction
My ancestors spoke to me, believed in me, told me to stop being quiet, embrace who I am
Just because I can't speak my native tongue, or am not brown enough to pass your ideaologies of Māori, does not make me any less Māori
I am Māori enough??
