2014 Definition
Malignant tumour which has been positively diagnosed with histologically confirmed and characterized by uncontrolled growth of malignant cells and the invasion and destruction of normal tissueMalignant tumour includes leukaemia, lymphoma, and sarcomaThe following are excluded:
- Tumours that have malignant potential, suspicious malignancy, pre-malignant, of boderline malignance, neoplasm of unknown behaviour, or cervical dysplasia CIN-1, CIN-2, CIN-3
- Any non-melanoma skin carcinoma unless there is evidence of metastases to the lymph node or beyond
- Prostate, Thyroid, Urinary Bladder cancers with T1N0M0 classification or below
- Gastro-intestinal Stromal Tumours with mitotic cells below 5/50 HPFs or T1N0M0 classification and below
- Chronic lymphocitic leukaemia less than RAI stage 3
- All tumours in the presence of HIV
2003 Definition
Malignant tumour characterised by the uncontrolled growth of malignant cells with invasion and destruction of normal tissue. This diagnosis must be supported by histological evidence of malignancy and confirmed by an oncologist or pathologistThe following are excluded:
- Tumours showing changes of carcinoma-in-situ and tumours which are histologically described as pre-malignant or non-invasive, including but not limited to carcinoma-in-situ of the breasts, cervical dysplasia CIN-1, CIN-2, CIN-3
- Hyperkeratosis, Basell cell squamous skin cancer, melanomas of less than 1.5 breslow thickness, or less than Clark level 3 unless there is evidence of metastases.
- Prostate cancers histologically described as T1a or T1b, or lesser. T1N0M0 papillary micro-carcinoma of the thyroid less than 1cm in diameter, papillary carcinoma of the bladder, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia less than RAI stage 3
- All tumours in the presence of HIV

- History of typical chest pain
- New characteristic ECG changes
T-wave inversion
ST Elevation / Depression
Pathological Q-wave or left bundle branch block
- Elevation of cardiac biomarkers
Troponin T or I levels above 0.5 ng/ml
CKMB enzymes above generally accepted lab levels
- Evidence of new loss of viable myocardium or new regional wall motion abnormality
2003 Heart Attack DefinitionDeath of a portion of heart muscle arising from inadequate blood supply to the relevant area which is supported by three or more of the following
- History of typical chest pain
- New ECG changes proving infarction
- Elevation of Troponin T or I
- Evidence of CKMB enzyme
- Left ventricular ejection fraction less than 50% measured 3 months or more after the event
