Soviet control
Rigged elections in Poland in January 1947, main opposition leader fled to London
Disrupted the government in Romania, disarmed them and forced the King to appoint a communist government. The communists won the election in 1946 and abolished the monarchy
After Hungary experienced an economic crisis, the communist party was able to seize control of the Ministry of the Interior and control the police. They used this to gain control of the country, and then won the election in 1947
A commnist government was set up in Bulgaria in 1944, won rigged elections in 1945, and banned all other parties
by 1947, the communist party controlled the government and the army in Czechoslovakia which they used to take control. Non-communists were arrested and sometimes murdered
The USSR failed to maintain control of Yugoslavia and it was expelled from Cominform and had economic sanctions applied
Containment
The Truman Doctrine was a plan set up by the US to prevent any non-communist countries from becoming communist. The USSR responded with Cominform
the Marshall Plan was an American policy to provide money to other capitalist countries so that they had enough money and wouldn't turn to communism. The USSR responded with Comecon
US-Soviet relations
Stalin put Soviet-controlled governments in the satellite states. Truman saw this as a blatant attempt to spread communism
The secret development of the atomic bomb angered and worried the Soviet Union
The Long Telegram was a message sent to America claiming that the USSR wanted to destroy capitalism and that they feared everyone else wanted to destroy communism. It also claimed the USSR would back down if faced with a show of strength
The Novikov Telegram was a message to the USSR that claimed that the USA wanted to use their military to control the world, they weren't interested in collaboration and the American people wanted a war against the USSR
Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill met at three conferences
Yalta (1945)
This was to decide what happens after the war including a Soviet sphere of influence and divide Berlin
Potsdam (1945)
Roosevelt had died by this time and was replaced by Truman, Churchill was replaced by Attlee in a general election. This conference was to decide more post-war plans but ended up with more falling out as Truman revealed they had an atomic bomb and Stalin set up a communist government in Poland, despite the protests from Poles
Tehran (1943)
This conference was to decide plans for the war including invading France and creating the UN
