Direct Action- 16th Aug 1946
what was the clear outcome?
showed that relationships between racial communities was on thin ice; and potential compromise between leaders was clearly not going to happen.
Also showed that the idea of partition was becoming stronger and stronger.
called together all muslims and asked for a hartal- urging Muslims to prepare for direct action.
What happened?-
Wavell appealed to C and ML but his effort fell on dear ears- shock @ Gandhi's response due to his clear belief of life.
Gandhi said 'If India wants a blood bath; she can have one'
Jinnah argued that Pakistan was worth the death of millions.
^also included looting and arson.
Muslim and Hindu were killing each other.
72 hours- 5'000 dead, 20'000 seriously injured and 100'000 left homeless.
Police in Calcutta were ordered by ML to take the day off.
Led IN into a civil war.
Reasons-
Main aim was Pakistan- wasn't getting anywhere with it.
Jinnah felt undermined by Wavell
there had been no success at a peaceful solution.
tired of negotiation and getting nowhere- with both C and GB.
Needed to show the strength of the ML.
