Feminist perspective on the family-
Gender conflict perspective.
Liberal feminists-
Main concern is fighting for female equal rights.
argue female position is changing due to changing attitudes and changes made to law- e.g. Sex discrimination act 1975- outlaws discrimination in workplace.
see we are moving towards greater opportunity- but in order to reach equality attitudes and socialization need to change- for both sexes.
family view is based on the 'march of progress'- first introduced by Young and Willmott.
although they do argue there is still progress to be made in family equality.
studies show that men are taking on more domestic labor and the socialization of sons/daughters is becoming more equal.
Marxist Feminism-
argue in the family female oppression isnt down to men- but capitalism.
Radical Feminism-
RF argue argue that all societies have been founded on patriarchy
also argue family and marriage are key institutions.
men benefit from unpaid female domestic labor and their sexual services.
they also dominate through domestic and sexual abuse and using it as a threat.
argue men are the enemy and are the key source of female oppression.
RF argue patriarchy needs to be overturned, the family needs to be abolished and women need to become independent from men.
They argue 'political lesbianism'- idea that heterosexual relationships oppress women due to 'sleeping with the enemy'
Sociologist Greer argues-
Difference Feminism-
These feminists argue that we cannot generalize a females experiences.
They argue all women have different experiences- working class are different to middle class women, black women differ to white women and lesbian differ to heterosexual women.
white women view the family negatively and therefore ignore that black females also face racial opposition- so therefore black women view the family positively and as a beacon of support.
A03- Others argue that DF ignored many women share similar experiences- all face the threat of sexual harassment/assault; domestic abuse; low pay etc...
Liberal feminist Somerville;
argues RF fail to realize that female position has improved considerably
argues this is due to increased job opportunity, increased access to divorce, control over fertility and the ability to choose their future.
A03- Somerville does understand that women have long to go before reaching full equality- she argues there is a need for 'family friendly policies' allow for greater gender equality.
^Also argues that straight relationships will make the RF idea of separatism unlikely to work.
A03- others argue LF fail to see underlying issues in female oppression- and agree that changes in law/attitudes will not be enough to make change.
MF & RF agree that far-reaching changes to deep rooted social structures are needed.
Argue that capitalism affects/ benefits from them in 3 ways-
Reproduction of labor force- idea that female unpaid labor in homes; domestic labor, raising children.
Absorption of anger- take the grunt of male anger that results from working (capitalist society).
Reserve army of cheap labor- they are used when extra workers are needed. when no longer needed they are sent back home to continue on with 'life'.
^Ansley describes women as ';takers of shit'- soak up the male frustration caused by alienation of work.
