Wendell Berry
Wendell Berry believes that the purpose of a community and government is to be working together. That if a person is afraid to vote the government is useless. In the interview, Berry states, "Cooperation means working together. If you cant work together, you cant have a community." He feels that the society we are in today is not working together as a "cooperation". This community is not degenerating it is disintegrating because instead of working together we are working against each other.
Berry is opposed to people becoming isolated in their own work from the community. He says in the interview, "What you have to regret is the isolation of the specialists so that they're at liberty to judge their work by professional standards to the exclusion of any other kind." This shows that he believes that everyone should seek to contribute to the community in their work. He also believes that a person should not allow their work to separate them from the community. We can see this echoed in Hannah Coulter, with Caleb drifting away from his family as a result of his education.
Wendell Berry emphasizes the fact that many people today try to change the world by changing the thoughts and opinions of others. He states that we are not able to change the world but we are able to change our little corner of the world (our own community) he believes it is unreasonable to attempt to change the world when there is such a varying amount of opinions.
Caleb's community: He becomes a agriculture professor.
Also helps Virgie to repair his mental state when he comes home. Hannah recounts "He looks better. Confidence seems to be coming back into his eyes" (Berry 184). This is a direct result of him reuniting with his family and beginning to work on the farm.
she was unsure about moving out of the Feltner House and when she met Nathan one of the reasons she did not want to court him was because she didn't want to leave her new home
He gets into bad things in order to spite his father. In chapter 23 he comes back to Port William and helps with the farm and gets mentally better. The community becomes closer because of Virgie's condition. The community reaches out to help him and this is how a community should work
When Virgil returns the community works together to try and help him by giving him permission doing the things he feels uncomfortable doing.
