Essay Question - Cognitive Development
Cognitive development
is the construction of thought processes, including remembering, problem solving, and decision-making, from childhood through adolescence to adulthood.
Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive Development
2nd Stage: Preoperational Thought
• 2-7 years
3rd Stage: Concrete Operational Thought
• 7-11 years
1st Stage: Sensorimotor Stage
•Birth – 2 years
4th Stage: Formal Operational Thought
• 11- 15 years
First Stage: Sensorimotor Stage
• This stage has six sub-stages.
• Learning tasks: motor development & object permanence.
• Infants organize and coordinate their sensations and perceptions with their physical movements.
Sub-Stages of Sensorimotor Thought
c) Secondary Circular Reactions: (4-8 months)
• Actions repeated because of their consequences and may involve objects.
d) Coordination of Secondary Circular Reactions: (8-12 months)
• Coordination of schemes and intentionality.
b) First habits and primary circular reactions: (1- 4 months)
• Habits: Reflex separated from its stimulus
• Primary circular reactions: Reproducing events that originally occurred by chance.
e) Tertiary Circular Reactions: (12-18 months).
• Novelty and curiosity emerges; exploration of new possibilities with objects.
a) Simple Reflexes: (1 month)
• Sensation & action coordinated though reflexes.
f) Internalization of Schemes: (18-24 months)
• Ability to use primitive symbols develops.
Sensorimotor Stage: A not B Error
• The A not B error means that a child will look for an object in a place where they previously found it, not where it has been moved to.
