Weakness:
The strange situation is culture bound, meaning it is likely to have alternative meanings in countries outside of Western Europe and the USA. For example, cultural differences in childhood experience is likely to lead children to respond differently to the strange situation. Also, caregivers from different cultures might respond differently. For example, Japanese parents are rarely separated from their children. As a result, when the two are reunited, the mother has a tendency to run and pick up her child, therefore making it difficult to observe the behaviour of the child at the reunion stage.
