What is an ideal worker?
-An 'ideal worker' is one who is totally committed to and always available to fulfil his work duties.
-Employees who embrace this expectation are richly rewarded, especially those performing professional or managerial jobs.
How do organisations control employees professional identity
Structure of Work-Prioritise work commitments over all other life demands
Performance Evaluations- Continually reward and reinforce those who fulfil expected professional identity requirements
How employees cope with conflicting professional identities
Employees cope through 'straying' away from the expected identity
Through Passing and Revealing:
-Passing involves the intentional/misinterpretation of membership in the favoured group
-Revealing: intentional/accidental disclosure of non-membership in the favoured group
Tools for straying:
Personally: altering work structures. Done through focusing on local client base and working on internal projects to reduce travel times &working from home
What is a professional identity?
-
Two main forms of professional identities:
– Expected: employer expectations and beliefs
– Experienced: own expectations and beliefs
