ATTACHMENT (2)
Ainsworth's Strange Situation (1969)
Aims & Pro
-
7 episodes involving infant, parent
& stranger (3 mins each)
-
Caregiver returns, stranger leaves
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Evaluation
Strength - very good inter-rater reliability - different observers agree on attachment types of the same children
Limitation - Some doubt whether Strange Situation is culture-bound eg. different outside Western Europe & USA
Strength - support for predictive validity of the Strange Situation - secure babies have more success at school, better romantic relationships & adult friendships
Cultural Variations
-
-
-
Bowlby's Theory of Maternal Deprivation
-
-
Romanian Orphan Studies
-
-
-
Evaluation
Strength - fewer confounding variables than other orphan studies - other studies involved children who had experienced loss/trauma before institutionalised
Limitation - may be issues with generalisability in Romanian orphanage studies - conditions may be worse than other institutions
-
Influence of Early Attachment
on Later Relationships
-
Evaluation
Limitation - validity issues - most studies assess infant-parent attachment by interview/questionnaire not Strange Situation
Limitation - several studies suggest association between infant attachment type & later relationships but correlation doesn't mean causality
Mixed evidence on continuity of attachment
e.g.. Zimmerman (2000) assessed infant attachment type & adolescent attachment to parents - little relationship between the two
