Suicide attack are one method of political violence, including terrorism - although the attack on the USS Cole in October 2000 was a suicide attack, it was not a terrorist attack as it was targeted against military
Suicide attacks have been conducted by secular and Marxist groups (LTTE, PKK) - so not specific to any religious tradition, as most religions ban suicide - the challenge for religious groups is to justify the challenge by distinguishing between martyrdom and suicide

Assesses the question of rational choice - addresses why some committed individuals or people seeking revenge do not engage in martyrdom
Organizational
Strategic benefits for groups, weaken opponent, boost morale, disproportionate psychological impact. Also, infrastructure, supporting families of martyrs - if benefits are strong, why do not more groups engage in suicide attacks?
