What is an animal
Classification of animals
there are more than 1.5 million species
of all the animals about 97% are Invertebrates
biologists have classified animals into 35 major groups each which are called a phylum.
all vertebrates are classified into one Phylum and Invertebrate in another.
animals are classified according to how they are related to other animals
this is determined by their body structure, the way the animal develops, and it's DNA.
Functions of animals
other
animals are very diverse
the major functions of animals are
obtaining food and oxygen
an animal cannot make food by itself
getting food
animals can feed on plants, other animals, or a combination of both.
animals use adaptions to eat different kinds of food
food provides animals with the energy and nutrients that they need to survive.
most animals take food into a cavity inside their body where the food is digested.
in order to release the energy from the food the animals cells need oxygen.
some animals like birds get oxygen from air and others like fish get oxygen from water.
keeping conditions stable
animals must maintain a stable environment inside their bodies
if this stability is lost the animal cannot survive
examples
cells that get too hot start to die
if an earthworm is in the sun for too long it will die
if a lizard is out in the cold for too long it will die, same with humans
movement
all animals move in some way or form
different animals move in different ways
some animals will move for a short period in their lives and when they find a place they will stay there.
reproduction
most animals reproduce sexually
this is the process in which a new organism develops from the joining of two sex cells.
this can be a sperm and an egg - fertilization
these two cells have carry the information such as size or color. organisms resulting in sexual reproduction are a mix of both parents
asexual reproduction is when a single organism produces a new organism identical to itself.
examples
sea anemones split down the middle.
Structure of animals
Cells
Most cells of animals are organized into higher levels of structure.
this includes...
tissues
a group of cells that prefomrs a specific function
organs
tissues may combine to form and organ
systems
groups of structures that preform the broadest functions of an animal are called systems.
