Macbeth - deeper implications
AMBITION
shown in both lady macbeth and macbeth, they are both tempted at the idea of having more power
through the character of macbeth, shakespeare shows how ambition can be one's downfall, as Macbeth transforms from a noble man a arrogant traitor
regardless of gender, shakespeare presents over ambition as a vice to macbeth and lady macbeth
ambition is presented as evil, eventually driving lady macbeth to madness and killing them both
the character of banquo is presented as a contrast to macbeth's vice as he has self control and virtuous thoughts
SUPERNATURAL
a major theme in jacobean times, as people did strongly believe in the supernatural
the audience therefore would take these ideas seriously, and possibly blame the witches for macbeth's faults
the witches prophecies as the beginning of the play drive the whole plot, showing their significance
the portrayal of the witches confirms the jacobean distrust in the supernatural
shakespeare questions the influence of fate and how much people can control their own fate
lots of references to how macbeth was somehow possessed - eg how he couldn't say amen
GENDER
lady macbeth and macbeth's relationship doesn't match with the typical gender roles in the jacobean times

throughout the play shakespeare supports the idea of the divine right of kings
shakespeare reinforces the responsibility of the monarch to protect the country
through macbeth, shakespeare demonstrates the worst possible traits in a king
DECEPTION/DISHONESTY
through macbeth and lady macbeth shakespeare shows that deception will ultimately lead to one's downfall
throughout the play, shakespeare associates honesty with goodness and dishonesty with condemnation
ultimately, shakespeare condemns those who deliberately mislead others
shakespeare suggests that dishonesty can be a destructive force in a relationship
LOYALTY/TRUST
throughout the play, shakespeare displays treachery as the ultimate betrayal
through duncan, shakespeare warns the audience of the dangers of blind trust and loyalty in leadership
macbeth's lack in loyalty is contrasted with other characters such as banquo, leading to the audience futher condemning macbeth's actions

shakespeare warns of the risks of attempting to interfere with society's natural order
shakespeare condemns those who try to alter their social status for personal gain
