Analyze and Interpret Data

Identify Area of Focus

I analyzed the quantitative data by scoring the data and using descriptive and inferential statistic methods to evaluate the results. Looking at the results, I found that 43% of middle school students say they have smoked or thought about smoking e-cigarettes or vape, while 51% of high school students have. Youth of minority were 12% greater than those not of minority who vape or use e-cigarettes.

The problem I want to study is adolescent vaping and e-cigarette usage in the middle school and high schools in the community I work in.

How common is adolescent vaping and e-cigarette usage in a rural and culturally diverse community?

The methods to collect qualitative data that I would use include interviews, observations, and documents. I would visit with students and administration about the topic and observe the behaviors of the students and administration in the school setting where vaping might occur. I will also use documents like academic journals to provide support and background information for my study.

I analyzed the qualitative data by hand through reading the data, marking by hand, and then divide them into parts. I would also code the data and then identify common themes. The qualitative results provided common themes. Most participants vaped or used e-cigarettes because their friends/peers. They also were more likely to vape in groups. Adolescents participate in vaping and e-cigarette use because they feel that it is less harmful for their body.

My main tasks for my plan is to work with community partners to spread awareness about adolescent vaping and e-cigarettes. I would work to implement my plan by providing awareness material to community partners, schools, teachers, and students. I would also hold a workshop/seminar for the public to ask questions and learn about vaping and e-cigarettes.

I collected quantitative data from a group of participants in middle school, high school, and school administration. I will collect demographic information, attitudinal measure, behavioral observation, and factual information. I think that these instruments are important because they can give more insight to the participants and why they are participating in vaping and e-cigarettes.

I again analyzed the quantitative data by scoring the data and using descriptive and inferential statistic methods to evaluate the results. Looking at the results, I found that 23% of boys smoked or thought about smoking vape or an e-cigarette over girls. This was the biggest change seen when comparing the second data collection to the first.

I again analyzed the qualitative data by hand through reading the data, marking by hand, and then divide them into parts. I would also code the data and then identify common themes. I found more themes within the groups that boys and girls participated in the act of vaping in groups of the same sex most often.

Develop Second Action Plan

When thinking of how I would change the old action plan to the second study, I would focus on groups of youth that are of the same gender. Youth will feel more comfortable when sharing and answering my questions. I would make youth aware of the dangers of vaping and e-cigarettes.

More quantitative data was needed to obtain more cohesive results about adolescent vaping and e-cigarette usage in rural and culturally diverse communities. I looked at the demographics of boys versus girls in their usage. I also added more participants to the study, thus gathering demographic information, attitudinal measure, behavioral observation, and factual information.

When thinking about qualitative data to collect, I focused more on the why adolescents vaped and used e-cigarettes. I again used interviews, observations, documents to gather my information. I think that it was important to continue to strengthen the why in order to get the best information.
