Defendant can also submit evidence of good character traits to prove they would not have acted in a specific way
Defendants of 'effective good character' are entitled to a direction from the judge which makes clear that it may affect the propensity and credibility of the defendant

judge also has a discretion to give a good character direction if the defendant has irrelevant and old minor convictions

Defining Bad Character
If evidence is classed as bad character evidence, then it can only be introduced through one of the seven gateways, if it is not character evidence, then it can be admitted so long as it is relevant
The wider the scope of BC evidence, the more Defendants are protected as the harder it is to get the evidence to court
Definitions include
s98 CJA 203 - Evidence of, or of a disposition towards misconduct on his part

Previous convictions are most commonly used to suggest misconduct or a disposition towards misconduct
However, some evidence other than convictions can qualify as bad character evidence
