The Six Propositions
- Only love is intrinsically good.
Only one thing is intrinsically good, namely love: nothing else at all
-
Some things are extrinsically good, as they serve some sort of end, whilst others are good in themselves.
- Love wills the neighbour good, whether we like them or not.
Love is an attitude, not a feeling.
Agape love is selfless a not necessarily reciprocated, it is not sentimental.
Fletcher references to Jesus' call to love everyone, including our enemies.
- The ruling norm of Christian decision making is love: nothing else.
-
For example, on the Sabbath, Jesus heals people, which is considered to be working.
- Love's decisions are made situationally not prescriptively.
Love is the norm, but doesn't tell us what to do in a situation. We have to gather the facts prior to deciding the case.
- Only the end justifies the means, nothing else.
-
- Love and justice are the same, for justice is love distributed, nothing else.
