Jonas is "selected" not assigned, The Receiver. What ever this job is, it is important. It trains you to be a committee member. It requires to feel pain, it requires wisdom, bravery, courage, integrity and "the ability to see beyond". That last one sounds strange to Jonas, but then the crowd looks funny (like the apple thing) and Jonas thinks he as it. Also, the trainer of Jonas has pale eyes too.
