energy efficiency : is a measure of how much useful work we can get form each energy we use . concerns unavoidable loss . combat by improving the technologies that generate and use power .
ways to improve energy efficiency- power plants and industry- transportation-buildings
improving energy efficiency -prolongs fossil fuel supplies, reduces oil imports and improves energy security, very high net energy, low cost, reduces pollution and environmental degradation, buys time to phase in renewable energy, creates local jobs
biomass: solid biomass or organic matter found implants common for cooking but not for electricity. gaseous or liquid biofuels is common for producing electricity.
disadvantages: 20% more greenhouse gases, huge amounts of water, environments destroyed
economic benefits: save money, create jobs and business opportunities
energy efficient vehicles: electric hybrid cars, plug in hybrid electric vehicle, all electric vehicle. however the problems are that they are expensive batteries and recharging stations need to be installed.
ways for people to use less gasoline: raise taxes on gasoline, improve mass transit on gasoline, improve mass transit systems, build bicycle only routes and areas.
solar energy: absorbs and stores heat from the sun directly
two solar thermal systems: parabolic mirror, and moving mirrors
advantages: no greenhouse gases or pollutants, no toxic materials, easy to use low maintenance
disadvantages: low energy efficiency, they cannot produce electricity at night and need big batteries for storing energy
wind power is abundant and widely distributed, carbon free and pollution free
disadvantages: they kill birds and bats
geothermal energy is heat stored in soil, underground rocks and fluids in the mantle
geothermal heat pump system
energy priorities improving energy efficiency and reducing energy waste -decreasing our dependence on nonrenewable fossil fuels -relying more on a mix of renewable energy
environmental benefits: save lives by sharply reducing air pollution, help keep climate change from spiraling out of control and creating ecological and economic chaos, slow the increase in ocean acidity
energy conservation: means reducing or eliminating the unnecessarily wasting of energy . concerns avoidable loss . we combat this by improving education, opportunities and incentives
energy waste happens because of energy inefficient technologies , internal combustion engine, nuclear, coal and natural gas power plants
ways for industry to save money and fuel -more energy efficient variable- speed electric motors,-recycling materials - energy efficiency in offices, - cogeneration
