Kevin, however, is not simply guilty by association. He shows time and time again that he does not understand or really care to understand the struggles that Dana is going through. At one point, when he travels back into the past with her, he remarks that "This could be a great time to live in,” speaking of how he wants to "...go West and watch the building of the country, see how much of the Old West mythology is true.” This remark shows how ignorant he is. Of course, antebellum Maryland isn't such a bad place for him, a white male; but for Dana, a black woman, her life is in danger every single day. Kevin simply doesn't get it, and doesn't really seem like he wants to.
