Millions of years ago plants died
Plants are buried in mud
Layers of mud squash the dead plants
Eventually heat + pressure turn the plants to coal
Oil + natural gases
Millions of years ago marine plants + animals die
They fall to the bottom and are covered in mud
Layers of sediment go on top of the mud
Eventually heat + pressure turn the remains into oil and gas

For a complete combustion
need lots of oxygen
forms water and carbon dioxide
methane + oxygen —> water + carbon dioxide
hydrogen + oxygen —> water
Incomplete combustion
limited supply of oxygen
forms water and carbon monoxide <— very toxic
