DEFINITION

CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS

  • Occurs when abnormal cells form in the brain. Can either be malignant or benign
  • Memory problems
  • Personality changes
  • Seizures
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headaches

MEDICAL MANAGEMENT

  • Chemotherapy
  • Surgery
  • Radiation therapy
  • CT scan and MRI
  • Angiogram,
  • Neurologic exam
  • Spinal tap and biopsy
  • As radiation exposure continues, changes become irreversible causing DNA gene mutation
  • inactivation of tumour suppressor genes and activation of oncogenes
  • As adaptive mechanism, changes in cell morphology occur
  • Uncontrolled cell division and decreased apoptosis
  • Irritation and damage to cell structure
  • Hyperplasia of brain cell giving rise to a brain tumour.
  • Due to causes like chemicals and radiation exposure
  • Suggest smaller more frequent meals
  • Provide pain relief measures
  • Suggest foods that are well tolerated by the patient
  • Encourage the family to keep the patient independent for as long as possible.
  • Administer prescribed antiemetics, sedatives
