OXYTOCIN
ROUTE
intravenous infusion or intramuscular injection
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Oxytocin is responsible for contraction of the womb (uterus) during childbirth and lactation
Oxytocin stimulates the uterine muscles to contract and also increases production of prostaglandins
which increase the contractions further.
INDICATIONS
antepartum
postpartum hemorrhage
VASOPRESSIN
ROUTE
Intramuscular, subcutaneos, Intravenous
MECHANISM OF ACTION
acts on the kidneys and blood vessels
Vasopressin helps prevent loss of water from the body by reducing urine output and
helping the kidneys reabsorb water into the body.
INDICATIONS
For the treatment of central diabetes insipidus.
treatment of hypotension in patients with post-cardiotomy shock or septic shock in patients who remain hypotensive despite fluids and catecholamines.
For the treatment of cardiac arrest
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Coronary artery disease, heart failure
Renal disease
Water intoxication
Migraine, seizure disorder
Asthma
SIDE EFFECTS
slow heartbeats;
pale skin, numbness in your fingers or toes;
stomach pain, gas, nausea, vomiting;
stomach pain, gas, nausea, vomiting;
sweating; or rash.
STORAGE
Store at room temperature( generic)
do not freeze, refrigerate after opening
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Where the uterus is already hyperactive or hypertonic
invasive cervical carcinoma
active herpes genitalis,
total placenta previa, vasa previa,
cord presentation or prolapse of the cord;
SIDE EFFECTS
Post partum hemorrhage
pelvic hematoma
hypertensive episodes
rapture of the uterus
nausea and vomiting
