Relationship with China
Singapore afraid of Communist China for serious reasons, however ties between the two countries improved when China joined the UN; after Deng replaced Mao, he formed diplomatic ties with USA and opened China's economy-Singapore's activity and relations with China grew tremendously
Overall Regional Outlook
Expansion of ASEAN and implementation of ASEAN Regional Forum as a platform for discussion - positive outlook
However:
1) Souring US-China relationships - new Asia doctrine by Trump might cause increased rivalry with China, and worsen the problem of trade imbalance
2) Upheaval in the Middle East - might stir up strong passions in Muslim Communities worldwide
3) South China Sea dispute - might disrupt Sea Lines of Communication
4) East China Sea dispute - might weigh down the booming Asia economy
Lessons Learnt
countries can only succeed in this challenging environment by forming cohesive ties and collaborate with both their neighbours and international partners, instead of turning inwards - smaller nations should also take the policies and interests of major emerging powers into consideration, can benefit from trade and economic cooperation with China
