7.1 and 7.2 Fossil Fuels and Nuclear Energy
Nuclear sources energy usage
Nuclear fission reaction:
chain reaction that releases enormous amounts of heat energy in a short time
Advantages and disadvantages
Oil
:Formed from decayed remains of ancient organisms that fell to the bottom of the sea and were covered in sand and mud before they had a chance to decompose. they were subjected at high temperatures and pressures for millions of years
Costly to produce
large quantities of air pollutant
Oil sands: often involve strip mining
shale rock: aste water from fracking can contaminate
DISADVANTAGES
natural gas
ADVANTAGES
cheaper to extract
less expensive and takes less time to build
burns cleaner than oil and coal
DISADVANTAGES
could slow the shift to reliance on renewable clean energy resources
drilling, production and distribution process for natural gas leaks large quantities of methane into atmosphere
huge inputs of energy
risk of groundwater pollution
coal
: has undertaken oil and is the largest energy source left
ADVANTAGES:
most abundant fossil fuel
produce electricity
produce heat
DISADVANTAGES:
dirtiest of all fossil fuels
largest emitters of co2
degrades land
black carbon particulates
air pollutants
causes severe illnesses
nuclear power
Fossil fuel energy usage
nonrenewable energy resources:
fossil fuels (oil, coal, natural gas)
renewable energy resources:
wind, flowing water (hydropower), solar energy, biomass (trees and other plants)and heat in earth's interior (geothermal)
about 90% of the commercial energy used in the world comes from nonrenewable energy resources (mostly fossil fuels) and 10% comes from renewable energy resources
Net energy:
amount of high-quality energy available from a given quantity of energy resource minus the high-quality energy needed to make the energy available
ADVANTAGES OF NUCLEAR POWER
reactor operating safely
low co2 emissions
DISADVANTAGES OF NUCLEAR POWER:
nuclear weapons
high cost
low net energy
nuclear waste
