CEREBROVASCULAR DISEASE
DEFINATION
Refers to the abnormal function of the nervous system caused by the interference with cerebral blood supply.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
The underlying pathology in the cerebrovascular disease is similar to the pathology of other form of vascular disease in other body parts.

NURSING MANAGEMENT
Support and secure airway, breathing and circulation if patient is comatose or unstable.
Maintain fluids, electrolyte and acid-base balance as well as normal blood glucose levels.

Prevent hypostatic pneumonia by means of regular chest physiotherapy and by changing the patient’s position 2hourly.

CAROTID ENDARTERECTOMY
This is carried out to patients with mild stroke or frequent TIAs to relieve obstruction of the carotid artery.
Patient with cerebral ischemia or carotid obstruction greater than 30% are not suitable for surgery.
