BRIEF
Research and select a “Phobia” to produce a 4 page (2 spreads) Editorial article for a magazine.
produce your own illustrations and/or photography for your subject matter
All your process work must be included in your Electronic Visual Diary.
All imagery is to be created or captured by you; NO images are to be downloaded from the internet.

Part One: Research
Research and select a phobia to design an editorial
Write an appropriate headline and when typesetting it, think about communicating the meaning
Proofread the information, do not just cut and paste. You will be required to make subtle adjustments to the text while retaining the overall message
Sub-headings should be used to break-up the content
(approx. 800 words)
List 3 current & emerging designers in the relevant field and record in your EVD
Collect 5 examples of editorial design that use image and typography and explain the common elements in publication design
Discuss and record visual design samples in your EVD regarding trends in layout design
Select a magazine that your phobia editorial may appear in and record the page size and costs
Document and evaluate any copyright information (legal, ethical and contractual) for any text you use from the internet and how it will apply to images you have created
Discuss with teacher/stakeholder and document in your EVD the method and stages of the design that require feedback
Part Two: Design
Generate 3 layout ideas for design
explore options and experiment,
think about the opportunities and constraints
Identify the requirements and analyse for the layout of the editorial design
Present, evaluate and refine concepts to meet requirements
Refine selected concept based on feedback provided by
teacher/stakeholder, document in your EVD
Ensure final concept complies with design brief and has been approved by teacher/stakeholder
You must use Adobe InDesign to design and produce the editorial from your selected layout design.
Use Master pages, grids and paragraph
styles
Identify and record in your EVD any potential issues,
i.e.; ensure text is not to close to edge or spine, etc.…
Ensure that images are saved correctly for print applications
Document in your EVD the process you used for setting type and the process for manipulating and preparing images you’ve used in the layout
Part Three: Final outcome
Evaluate the effectiveness of the design layout considering aesthetics vs. functional design and the relationship between type and image in your layout
Identify and record in your EVD the most important tools and processes used that makes producing this type of work more efficient whilst following WHS policies and procedures
Save and submit final work as print ready files – Packaged InDesign file and print ready PDF
Document in your EVD the skills that you have developed in this brief and how you might continue to develop skills in order to communicate a message
Obtain peer feedback from two (2) people and self evaluate as to the appropriateness of your final design and your processes
