Congenital Disorders (Edward's Syndrome)
Definition
A condition that causes severe developmental delays due to an extra chromosome 18.
Causes
It is caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 18th chromosome.
Pathophysiology
Edward’s syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by a third copy of all or part of chromosome 18. It occur due to problems during the formation of the reproductive cells or during early development. The rate of disease increases with the mother’s age.
Risk factors
Advance maternal age
Signs and symptoms
Underweight
Back of the head is prominent
Micrognathia
Cleft lip or cleft palate
Nursing management
A nurse may refer the mother to the psychologist for counselling.

Nursing intervention include teaching early stimulation , hygiene and feeding techniques permits better adjustment .

Women should have children before the age of 35.
