ENCEPHALITIS
MEDICAL MANAGEMENT
- Anti-inflammatory drugs: To relieve symptoms like fever, pain.
- eg. Ibuprofen · Acetaminophen · Naproxen Sodium
- Antivirals: To clear the virus causing infection.
- eg. Acyclovir · Ganciclovir · Foscarnet
- Anticonvulsants: To stop or prevent seizures, if any.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
- After multiplying, viremia of varying duration ensues
- Virus is transported to the target organ (brain)
- Virus enters the body through the bite of an insect vector
- Virus proliferates and damages neural tissue
- Thereby elicits nervous manifestations
DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

- CSF( cerebrospinal fluid) examination eg. lumbar puncture
- MRI (shows edema in the temporal lobe)
- Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
NURSING INTERVENTIONS

- administer analgesic agents as prescribed

- body weakness & decreased level of consciousness
- monitor signs of neurologic status with GCS

- bedrest with supine resting position, no pillows
- give treatment as prescribed
- assist patient on the bed and put up side rails
- give treatment as prescribed
- monitor twitching of hands, feet and mouth or other facial muscles

- Acute inflammation of the brain tissue commonly caused by herpes simplex virus
