Digestive System
Esophagus
“Heartburn” (胃灼熱/惡心)
Painful symptom at esophageal level with the feeling of warmth or burning in the substernal region (beneath the sternum)
Usually accompany dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing) – food stuck at constricted segments of the esophagus due to abnormal narrowing of the lumen
-
Gastric Ulcers
Cause
Alcohol, acidic food, coffee and tea on empty stomach
-
-
-
Treatment
“Triple” Therapy: combination of
antacids,
antibiotics
stomach wall protective agents
Duodenal Ulcer
Cause
corrosive action of acid (from stomach) and proteolytic enzymes (released from pancreas to digest protein)
Consequence
After ulcer bursts, duodenal contents leaked to peritoneal cavity ® peritonitis (腹膜炎)
Close proximity to liver and gallbladder will result in adhesion of inflamed tissue and ulceration of the organs
Large Intestine
-
The Verminform Appendix
-
Appendicitis (闌尾炎)
Charactersitc
-
When the appendix is hung in the pelvis, which is close to the female reproductive organs and the ureters Þ more dangerous during appendectomy (surgical removal of the appendix)
-
-
Tonsils
Function
Stimulation of swallowing receptor areas upon food arrival to induce peristalsis and gut secretions.
-
-
Soft Palate (軟腭)
Function
During swallowing: soft palate (the tip is called “uvula”) moves upward and block entrance to nasal cavity
