DRUGS AFFECTING KIDNEY AND RENAL FUNCTIN( PENICILLIN-ANTIBIOTIC)
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Exert bactericidal effect by interfering with the ability of susceptible bacteria to build their cell walls when they are dividing
Prevent bacteria from bio synthesizing the framework of the cell wall, and the bacteria with weakened cell walls swell and then burst from osmotic pressure within the cell
INDICATIONS
Treat streptococcal infections (e.g. pharyngitis, tonsillitis, scarlet fever, endocarditis
Treat meningococcal meningitis if given at high doses
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Known allergy to penicillins and cephalosporins.
Causes renal disease, drug excretion is reduced.
Pregnancy and lactation. No adequate studies on the effect on fetus but these drugs can cause diarrhea and superinfectons may occur in the infant.
SIDE EFFECTS
Pain and inflammation at the injection site can occur with injectable forms of the drugs.
Abdominal pain
Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, fever, wheezing, anaphylaxis with repeated exposures
STORAGE CONDITIONS
Avoid freezing
Store at room temperature, in cool dry place
Keep on well ventilated area between 15 to 25 or up to 30 degrees celcius
ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION
Administered intravenously(I.V)
