impact ethics
LNT principals
-
Travel and camp on durable surfaces,
Only camp on previously used ground to ensure minimal change to the environment for example dead grass and dirt spots.
No camping locations, area restrictions, invasive species and plant announcements? Stay off of Alpine plants. Don’t walk on anything but rocks in the alpine zone. Many places don’t allow crampons in the Alpine zone open visitation is very fragile.
Politely remind other people of leave no trace ethics if they need it. Educate them on what it is and the effects of not using them is on the environment they might not know unless you tell them.
-
Dispose of waste properly,
-
-
Minimize campfire impacts,
Respect wildlife,
Just because it safe for animals does not make it safe for humans. Just because there is a goat path doesn’t mean you should use it, using it more only solidifies it more as a path. Help practice low impact
-
Do not keep plants or animals. Close encounters with animals are amazing, try to avoid them as much as possible.
You never know what an animal might do, and you want to avoid injuring it or yourself. Allow others the opportunity to enjoy what you have enjoyed.

-
Dishes.
Bring a mesh filter for straining dish water before putting it on the ground to catch micro food waste
-
Don’t wash in the river or the lake or the ocean. Soap is bad for the environment and will cause people to have diarrhea if it is left on the dishes. Biodegradable soap still shouldn’t be used.
-
-
Catholes
Baby wipes can be nice, if you make sure to pack them out.
Can be less messy than trying to carry toilet paper more expensive to use in her paper and will run out quickly.
-
Fires
Pour water over all the coals to make sure the fire is out. Keep fire away from structures and tents. Clear dead leaves, grass etc. to prevent forest fires.
-
Don’t be excessive, build fires to fulfill their purpose. Minimize campfire impacts.
-
Be careful having fires during the dry season because of wildfires. Check local fire restrictions due to climate many locations in the desert or on the West Coast restrict open alcohol stoves. Such as trangia stoves.
According to LNT, wood should be no wider than your thumb. Don’t transport wood over more than 10 miles because it may contain harmful bugs to the environment. Burn logs completely or scatter them after the fire is out if they are not fully burned.
-
Summit stewards.
They work to help preserve Alpine vegetation. Carry rocks to the tops of high peaks to designate where the trail is. They also educate people on LNT.
The importance of a Karen. Used for identifying trails, especially above tree line. Add a loose rock to Karen’s to help keep people on trail. Never make your own Karen because it can get people lost.
