CONVULSIVE CONDITION(PARTIAL SEIZURE)
DEFINITION
These do not involve the whole of the brain. These are seizures which affect only part of the brain at onset
CAUSES
Traumatic brain injury
Brain irritation result from surgery
Stroke or tumour
Diabetes melitus
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
Changes in vision
Difficulty in speaking
Numbness and tingling
Sweating or feeling anxious
Skin crawling like feeling
NURSING MANAGEMENT
Clear the site of blunt or sharp objects
Oosen clothing of client
Avoid precipitating stimulus such as gglaring light
Administer oxygen inhalation when needed
MEDICAL
Administer anti-convulsant as ordered, carbamazepine,valproate and lamotrigine
CARBAMAZEPINE-first line AED
VALPROATE-Alternative first line drug
NURSING INTERVENTIONS
Ensure patient to empty mouth of dentures or foreign objects if aura occurs and avoid chewing gum and sucking.
Maintain in lying positions, flat surface as this help in drainage of secretions.
Suppervise supplemental oxygen or bag ventilations as needed
Get ready for assist with intubation, if indicated
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Seizures also caused by episodic excessive and disoerdered neural activity in the brain.Ordinarily, electrical impulses are transmitted by action potential that involves a net positive inward ion influx causing depolarization in the neurons.
