Teaching Writing
Balanced Literacy
Independent Writing Provides opportunities for students to work on their writing. By creating: -creating a personal narrative or -practicing a new concept independently.
Shared Writing This is when the teacher and the students work together to write a product this could be by:
-Writing a letter about something important.
-Writing a short story about something that happened in class.
Interactive Writing: Is where the teacher and students work together to come up with ideas. *This can be done in creating class sentences, this is where the students choose what to say, as the teacher writes it down.
Writing Workshop
Mini Lesson / Introduction: This allows the teacher to introduce the objective for the day, this can be done through: -A read aloud or a -A mini lesson that is focused about a writing trait
Writing Time: This is the time that the students will be allowed to work independently on their writing. During this time the teacher may come around to follow up the students. -This could be guided writing time, were students are answering a certain writing prompt
Sharing Time: This is the time were students can share their writtings with others, it can be shared with peer or to the whole class during authors chair. -This is also an opportunity for the teacher to share their writing with the class, providing the students with examples.
Writing Process
Rehearsing / Pre-writing: Is the first stage of the writing process, this is were we begin to generate ideas for our writing.
Drafting: is the second stage of the writing process, by beginning to write down the story, this can be also down with some organizational tools. -the hamburger model - graphic organizers- outlining -story boarding
Revising: is the fourth stage of the the writing process, this is were a writer looks over their writing sample or rough draft, to see where it can be enhanced specific details, such as: - word choice -making a snapshot
Sharing: is the final stage of the writing process, this provided the author the chance to share their work with others. This can be through authors chair, where students get to share their story with the class.
Publishing: is the fifth stage of the writing process, this takes place after editing, once the final draft is completed, the final product is re-written or typed. Sometimes the final product can be used to create a book, with the students drawing, the student can draw pictures adding to their story.
Editing: is the third stage of the writing process, where the writer looks over their writing to see where more details can be added within their writing. Some examples of editing is -peer editing and self editing
6 Traits of Writing
Ideas are what bring a story or the writing together, it is the main idea of the writing. This could be about a favorite animal, toy, or memory.
Organization allows the writer to organize their thoughts, as well how they outline their story. -Creating and outline -Using as graphic organizer
Word Choice is what writers use, when telling their story. The words we choose to tell our story with can impact the readers emotions.
Sentence Fluency is important within writing, it is the flow and rhythm of the sentence. It allows the writer a chance to ask themselves does my sentence make sense? How can I improve it?
Convention is the different editing traits that students and teachers can use when editing and revising their work. Correcting spelling or grammar as well as adding detail to enhance their story.
Voice is how a writers add details into their story. This can be done through characters talking with each-other, or a character thinking.
