DRUG AFFECTING KINEY AND RENAL-MANNITOL(osmotic diuretics)
INDICATIONS
Used in in acute situations when it necessary to decrease IOP before eye surgery
Diuretics of choice in terms of increased cranial pressure or acute renal failure due to shock
Available as an irrigant in transurethral prostatic resection and other procedures
Use of diuretics to influence fluid shifts in pregnant patient is not appropiate.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
This is a sugar that is not well absorbed by the tubules and act to pull large amount of of fluids into urine due to osmotic pull exerted by large sugar molecules.
Pulls fluids into vascullar system from extravascular spaces like aqueous humor
Increase urine production
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Renal diseases, anuria, pulmonary congestion, exacerbeted by large shifts in fluids related to drug use.
Pregnancy, lactation can cause potential adverse effects to the fetus and mother.
Lactating woman , an alternative method of feeding should be instituted.
Routine use of this drug in pregnant patient is not appropiate.
SIDE EFFECTS
Irregular heart beat
Irritation or pain at injection site
Blurred vision
Dehydration
Headache
STORAGE CONDITIONS
Must be stored at room temperature of 15 to 30 degrees celcius.
Avoid freezing to avoid complication
ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION
Administered intrtavenously(I.V)
