PERICHONDRITIS
Definition
It is the infection and the inflammation of the cartilage, pinna and perichondrium.
Causes
Bacteria.
Injury to ear.
Trauma to the side of the head.
Risk factors
Ear surgery.
Ear piercing.
Contact sports.
Trauma of the head.
Clinical manifestations
Pain.
Swelling.
Abscess.
Redness.
Deformation of the ear structure.
Pathophysiology
Pus accumulates between the cartilage and the layer.
Layer of the connective tissue around it.
The pus cuts off the blood supply to the cartilage.
It destroys the cartilage.
Deformed ear is a result.
Nursing care plan
Reduce pain.
Alley anxiety.
Increase the knowledge about the condition.

Application of soothing bath.
Surgical management
Incision and drainage.
Medical management
Broad spectrum antibiotics.
Steroid medication.
OTITIS EXTERNA
Definition
This is the infection of the auricle and the external ear canal.
Causes
Bacterial micro-organisms.
Fungal micro-organisms.
Prickling of the ear.
Trapped water when swimming.
Clinical manifestation
Pain.
Tenderness.
Pulling feeling on the pinna.
Serous drainage.
Itching.
Swelling.
Risk factors
Excessive scratching.
Use of cotton ear swabs.
Long term use of earbuds.
Acne.
Eczema.
Pathophysiology
May occur as the pustule.
Occur as a furuncle associated with hair follicles.
The external ear canal is erythematous.
The external ear canal may be oedematous.
It can be filled with pus and flakes of skin debris.
Nursing management
Application of warm compresses.
Ear canal should be kept clean and dry.
Surgical management
Total ear canal ablation.
Bulla osteotomy.
Lateral ear resection.
Medical management
Otic antibiotics.
