DEFINITION
Use of Glasgow coma scale to assess the patient's level of consciousness. Scale is graded from 0-15 and there are three areas that are assessed

Determine whether the patient is fully conscious
Assess if the patient is alert and aware of their surroundings
Determine the degree to which the patient can be aroused
