Tier 1
Assign a classroom job: Ask student to do things that show the benefit of his larger size/height. Can you bring the supply box to the front? Can you bring down the X book from that shelf?
-
Moving position in class: Seat student close to teacher and away from others to keep student from getting peers off track.
Tier 2
Mentoring: Find a voluntary mentor for student. An older student or adult spending one-on-one time in a mentorship can help build confidence and find other areas where student is successful. Data Tracking: Mentor should track progress on a weekly basis, looking for improved confidence and self-esteem.
-
Peer tutoring: Student has shown an aptitude for math, so start peer tutoring in the classroom. Student will feel successful in using his strengths among his peers.
Tier 3
Use a Daily Behavior Form: Have Student set goals for himself to improve confidence and challenge himself in his friendships.
Teach Relationship Skills: Teach student (individual level) important relationship skills for how to be a friend. Assign classroom partners and teach classroom (group level) about communication, friendship, and supporting one another.
Use a Check in, Check out (CICO) goal sheet: Use this form to start the day off with encouragement specifically for Student and ask him to reflect on his behaviors each day. Alternatives to Suspension: If parents consent, use community service and the above BIP and behavior contract as an alternative to suspension. Keeping the Student in school is important and ideal for changing behavior.
Collaboration With Student’s Physician And/Or Mental Health Provider: Make a plan with Student's doctor to receive mental health support. Data Tracking: Track any changes in medication and frequency of counseling sessions to see effects on student behavior.
Behavior Contract: Utilize a daily behavior chart where student reflects on their behaviors and consequences (from the BIP)
Tier 1
Talk one-on-one with Student: Build a relationship with student and discover areas with potential success and/or areas that Student would see as a "reward".
Clear, consistent, and predictable consequences: Create and stick with consequences that are clearly communicated to Student. Always explain the "why" behind a consequence. Data Tracking: record every incident in classroom and correlating consequence. Track Students frequency of incidents and response to different consequences.
Proximity to other Students: Move Student to isolated area near teacher's desk for constant observation (and protection of other students)
Tier 2
Behavior Intervention Plan: Create a plan with student, parents, and staff to address seriously inappropriate behavior. Adjust plan as necessary. Data Trackng: Use data tracking form (PBISWorld.com Behavior & Intervention Tracking Form (Excel)) to monitor student's behavior on a weekly basis
Create a Reward System: Offer students rewards for good behavior. A bin with personal books under desk could be a good reward for Student if he stops stealing other's books. Rewards Student's good writing with extra free-write time during class.
Teach Class About Sexually Appropriate Behaviors: : If you are legally able to, teach classroom about appropriate sexual behavior (not explicitly, because these are 4th graders)Focus on consent to physical touch, awareness of others feelings, and inappropriate storytelling.
