Psychological resilience
Definition:
"individual has the capacity to withstand stressors and not manifest psychological dysfunction and psychopathology"
Working definition:

Individuals with resilience:
see problems as opportunities for growth, learning and development
view resilience as a dynamic quality
demonstrate dynamic self-renewal
Resilience factors
Positive emotions (humor, optimism)
Meaning (religious, spiritual, altruism)
Cognitive flexibility (positive reappraisal, positive explanatory style, acceptance)
Active coping style (exercise, eating regularly)
Models of coping stress
Transactional model:
the link btw stress and stressor is mediated by one's appraisal to situation, consisting on one's ability and resources to cope with stress
TM conceptualise stress as a result of how individual appraise the situation initially, and how one's appraise his resources to cope with stress
by perceiving stressor as positive or challenging rather than a threat, one will introduce positive coping strategies to reduce stress
besides viewing stressor positively, it is important to have support to boost growth
therefore, individuals has to change their self-perception on viewing the stressor to cope with stress
Health realisation/innate heath model:
the link btw stress and stressor is mediated by one's nature of cognition/thoughts
as stress results from appraising oneself and one's circumstances through a metal filter of insecurity and uncertainty, HR model focuses on appraising oneself and one's circumstance in a positive light in responding to stress.
by perceiving stressor with a positive filter of well-being that consists of a quiet mind, inner wisdom and common sense, it helps individual to understand nature of thoughts
thereby, individual will recognise these negativity thoughts, mitigate them, and access their natural positive feelings to come up with positive coping style
Characteristics of resilient individual
Characteristics:
ability to bounce back, recover from anything, known as survivor or thriver
"there is a will, there is a way", do not take no for an answer
strong tolerance for frustration
see problems as opportunities for growth
have a healthy social support network
able to recover from experiences in a crisis

Pre-impact phase:
*promoting and developing day to day resilience
eat and exercise regularly
build close and trusting relationships
set a meaning and purpose in their work
Impact phase:
*adopting resilience strategies

adopt task-focused perspective to concentrate on work
maintain communication and info flow
Post-impact phase:
*maintaining resilience
ensure on going support network
maintain and reaffirm ties with family and friends
return to daily routines gradually
Recovery phase:
*ensuring re-integration to normal duties
realise that recovering and returning to normal life would take some time
do not expect the performance level would be the same
seek professional help if symptoms continue to persist for a month
