Skeletal muscle relaxants
Dantrium
Indication
treat muscle spasticity
also used to prevent muscle stiffness and spasms
Contraindidcation
allergic to it
active liver disease such as hepatitis or cirrhosis.
a history of liver disease;
a breathing disorder such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease);
if you also use a narcotic (opioid) medication.
Side effect
mild diarrhea;
weakness, drowsiness;
dizziness;
tired feeling.
vomiting .
Storage
Store at room temperature .
away from moisture, heat, and light
Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
Route
Orall
Mechanism of action
Dantrolene depresses excitation-contraction coupling in skeletal muscle
by acting as a receptor antagonist to the ryanodine receptor
decreasing free intracellular calcium concentration
Zanaflex
Indication
multiple sclerosi
spinal cord injuries by temporarily relaxing muscle tone.
Route
Orall
Storage.
Store at room temperature
away from moisture and heat.
Side effect
drowsiness, dizziness, weakness;
dry mouth;
feeling nervous
blurred vision
flu-like symptoms
Contraindication
allergic to tizanidine,
take the antidepressant fluvoxamine (Luvox);
take the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (Cipro).
liver disease;
low blood pressure;
kidney disease;
Mechanism of action
Tizanidine is a central alpha-2-adrenergic receptor agonist
presumably reduces spasticity by increasing presynaptic inhibition of motor neurons.
reduce facilitation of spinal motor neurons.
Xeoim
Indication
severe spasms in the neck muscles
r muscle stiffness in the elbows, wrists, fingers, ankles, or toes.
eye muscle conditions
treat chronic drooling (sialorrhea).
used to temporarily lessen the appearance of facial wrinkles
Route
Intramuscular
Storage
stored at or below 25°C (77°F).
Side effect
dry mouth, tooth problems;
muscle weakness, body aches;
headache, neck pain
diarrhea;
stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat.
Contraindication
anyone younger than 18 years old.
Hypersensitivity reactions
infection at the proposed injection site(s).
Mechanism of action
, the toxin binds specifically to nerves which use the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.
First, the toxin binds specifically to nerves which use the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.
the neuron takes up the toxin into a vesicle by receptor-mediated endocytosis.
s the vesicle moves farther into the cell, it acidifies, activating a portion of the toxin
which triggers it to push across the vesicle membrane and into the cell cytoplasm.[
Amrix
Indication
relieve muscle spasms
Route
Oral
Storage
Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.
Side effect
drowsiness, tiredness;
headache, dizziness;
dry mouth;
upset stomach, nausea, constipation.
Contraindication
thyroid disorder
heart block,
congestive heart failure
a heart rhythm disorder.
taken an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days,
you have recently had a heart attack.
Mechanism of action
related to cyclic antidepressants
reserpine antagonism, norepinephrine potentiation, potent peripheral
and central anticholinergic effects, and sedation;
reduces tonic somatic motor activity influencing alpha and gamma motor neurons.
