Reaffirm Positive Classroom Behaviors:

Speak with student about behavioral expectations
Provide breaks for the student(s)

Provide with a classroom errand

Quiet activities like drawing or coloring to express emotions in a healthy manner

Acknowledge good behavior with sincere and specific praise
Be sure you have your student's full attention when you praise their good behavior
Praise frequently to show the student:
a.) you are paying attention to their actions
b.) they are capable of making good choices

Remind student of the positive behaviors expected within the classroom
Structured breaks
Provide student with a safe space in the classroom to sit quietly. Set up a time for 3 mins.
Provide a safe space away from other students, inside or outside the classroom depending on the severity of the tantrum. Give a timer for 5 mins to student.
Rewards and incentives
Provide a sensory tool for the student to help them calm down before reaching their boiling point

Send short letters of affirmation home with the student
If they behave, control their emotions, participate well in class, allow them to choose a special game or activity for free time

Make a form listing the main behavioral issues the student struggles with
Go over the form with the student so they understand how it will work
Rate the child throughout the day

Within one month, if the student continues to struggle, move on to Tier three
Tier 3
Student meets with school counselor
Based on meeting with counselor....
Meet with parents to discuss the classroom issues further.
Have counselor present if needed
Work with parents to create a new behavioral plan for the student
Parents must sign the plan daily to ensure they have seen it
Implement suggested behavior modifications in class
Remove student from students or situations that may trigger a tantrum
Provide space and tools that will help the student regain control (music, stuffed toy, putty, etc)
Meet with parents
Have counselor present if needed (Counselor should be present if they suggested testing for the child)
Work with parents to create a behavioral modification chart for the student
Parents must sign the chart daily to ensure they have seen it
If testing is needed, work with parents to find a professional to carry out the testing and to understand why the testing is important
Implement suggested behavior modifications in class
Continue to provide a separate space for the child if they need their own time
Provide tools that will help the child maintain focus (fidget spinners, stuffed toys, calming music, etc...)
Have an assistant work with the student to support them in the classroom
Continue to encourage and praise good behavior. Never give up looking for the positives, and reminding the student of their ability, value, and worth. Believing in them to be their best self is a powerful tool for change and growth
Counselor can advise teacher on how to move forward and help the student calm down and control their emotions. They may also be able to provide deeper insight into the triggers causing the tantrums
Counselor can provide advice on how to help the child refocus their energy, and to get them reengaged in the class. They may also suggest testing for a learning disability or attention deficit disorder.
