DEFINITION
Its a condition that is characterized by recurring spontaneous convulsions of unknown causes
CAUSES
infections such as meningitis and or encephalitis.
hyperpyrexia
inborn errors of metabolism
brain tumours
congenital defect of the central nervous system.
acidosis, hypoxia and electrolyte imbalance
trauma such as birth injury
HEALTH EDUCATION
teach patient that medication is for life and she\ he must be faithful to taking it.
hazardous activities should be avoided such as swimming and horse riding.
medical alert disc should be worn
patient should not work at heights for instance working at scaffolding.
avoid stress and anxiety as it may trigger epileptic episodes
ASSESSMENT AND COMMON FINDINGS
grand mal epilepsy
partial seizures
petit mal epilepsy
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
A spontaneous electrical discharge occurs from a group of neurons , referred to as a seizure focus.
MANAGEMENT
turn patient into recovery position
reassure the patient
assess the environment for any potential hazards
nurse patient in the cot sided bed
assess for any injuries
do not force anything in the patients mouth
give prescribed medications
