How did the RCC lose power?
The Crusades
Goals of crusades
-
New Goal: Personal
Secondary goal:
to weaken the religion of Islam
Secondary goal: Reunite the different branches
Main goal: Capture the Holy Land
Political: Kings and Church officials wanted to rid themselves of knights
Social: Sons who would not inherit land could obtain land via the crusades(land = power and place in society.
To encourage participation, the Pope assured anyone who died from participating in the Crusades would be granted a place in heaven.
10 total Crusades ( Including the children's Crusades)
Indulgence: A release from performing the penalty
Effects:
People didnt like how the Crusades were being carried out: (Murder, Rape, Stealing, etc.)
Instead of the RCC gaining power, other rulers gained power.
RCC not delivery on their promise to reclaim the Holy Land
Credibility issue
The Black plague
Killed millions ( throughout Asia and Europe)
Originated in Asia
Flea attached to rats and the rats ride a ship and spread it.
20-25 million in Europe
Effects:
People ask the Pope to pray to God to end the plague
The Pope says yes, prays and the plague continues
