Actions of John Pym

The MPs were led by John Pym, and were provided with a platform from which they could attack as Charles was unable to dissolve this parliament quickly due to his need for finance
John Pym, realising that the religious issue could drive a wedge between MPs- setting up a committee to discuss religious issues- Westminster Assembly of Divines-Assembly did not meet until July 1643; thus the clash over religion was postponed rather than resolved
There was a dislike by some about the lengths to which Pym and his supporters were prepared to go in undermining the king’s position and that of the church.
Pym was keen to demonstrate that Charles was not fit to control an army, and so drew up the “Grand Remonstrance”.
Charles' actions
Charles appointed Thomas Lunsford as Governor of the Tower of London- feared this was a sign that Charles was about to regain his full powers through the use of force- Lunsford convinced for murderous assault and pardoned by King
Charles failed to appoint the Earl of Essex as commander of troop to crush Irish rebellion- would have reassured parliament and in the end, Charles didn't appoint anyone at all
Charles tried to charge five of his key critics in parliament with high treason, which included encouraging the Scots to invade England- 1642- Charles arrived at House of Commons with 400 soldiers to arrest but had already fled
