INFECTIVE CONDITIONS (MENINGITIS)
DEFINITION
This term refers to infection and inflammation of the menges or coverings of the brain.
CAUSES
invasion of the cerebrospinal fluid by an infectious agent
non-infectious meninggitis is also described
CLASSIFICATIONS
Septic- this type of meningitis is due to bacterial infection and is often charectirised by pus formation.
Aseptic- this type of meningitis is not charectirised by pus formation and is due to infection with other infectious agents such as viruses (mumps, poliovirus, herpes simplex.)
Non- infectious causes- these include brain tumours, cerebrovascular accident, multiple sclerosis e.t.c
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
In meningitis, the meninges become swollen and inflammed. inflammatory exudate increases intracranial pressure and the infection causes an uncrease in the CFS production and pressure that is measurableon lumbar puncture. The inflammatory reaction causes irritation of cerebral tissues and may cause convulsions. The inflammed and irritated meningis cause neck stiffness and headache.
ASSESSMENT
SUBJECTIVE DATA-Flue-like prodrome quickly followed by marked pyrexia and weakness, headache and neck stiffness
OBJECTIVE DATA- Signs of meningeal irritation such as positive Brudzinski's and Kernig's sign
MANAGEMENT
Administration of antibiotics or antiviral agent such as acytoclovir
intravenous route should be used for rapid effect
supportive masures to maintain circulation, respiration, nutrition and hydration should be implemeted
anticonvulsants can be given to prevent and control seizures
