6.3 Food Production Enviromental Impact
Food Production Issues
Water: a lot of wate ris consuemend on this crops, many evaporates which is not efficient and many water ecosystem are polluted with chemicals.
Air Pollution: livestock produce large amounts of green house gases, machinery is used which uses fossil fuels and slash culture releases CO2
Soil Degradation: soil is eroded, desestification, salinization and fertility is loss.
Human Health: all the chemicals added into the crops are consumed by humans either directly or by bio augmentation. As well as the antibiotics in the livestock.
Biodiveristy Loss: fields are cleared removing habitats and ecosystems to make space for a monoculture
Agriculture Issues
Water is consumed, over 70% of aquifer water is used (unsustainable)
Desertification is when topsoil falls because of dorught and human activities like overgraizng or using it for crops that exposes the topsoil to erosion
Water is polluted through eroded topsoil sediments
Fertilizers runoff and cause eutrophication and contaminate more water soruces as well as when they percolate into the groundwater.
Pesticides runoff into the waterways, many of these harm biodeversity and accumalate in predators, or kill non intended organisms.
Top soil is the most fertile layer is is most commonly eroded. causing loss of fertility, water pollution and release of carbon
Rill Erosion
Gully Erosion
Sheet Erosion
Air Pollution: slash and burn farming in which the old crop stubs are burned increaisng CO2 emissions, and the use of machinary and energy (fossil fuels)
Meat Production Issues
Water consumption, animals use a lot of the fresh water available, to produce food of the animals.
Water pollution, feces often run into streams and then can contaminate the water and groundwater in such large numbers and cause eutrophication
Habitat destruction to make space for the livestocl
Climate Change, live stock specially cows produce methane and other green house gasses.
Overgrazing which result in salinization and desertification of the top soil.
Feedlots is a way to organize cattle and livestoff into confined spaces to maximize meat porduction and profits
Aquaculture Issues
large amounts of antibiotics are given and promote antibotic resistance in the enviroment
Habitat loss to make way and space for large amount of fish
Huge concentrated wastes can damage the aquatic ecosystems
Solutions
To conserve top soil you can plant in terraces, intercropping, countour plants, not plow and create wind breaks
To restore fertility use nitrogen and other chemicals as well as using natural fertilizers like manure and make crop rotation
Eat less meat!
Impove how wastes are disposed, and set up self sustaining polyaquculture systems to increase biodiversity.
