:earth_americas: Close Reading - "From War to America."
Second Read - Dig a Little Deeper! :hole:
How does the author feel about the text? The author feels supportive of refugees by telling the story of a family that moved to America seeking escape from Syria. She uses imagery such as, "Littered with bullet casings and broken glass." To describe their struggle. She then goes on to describe America with words like, "Felt very Welcome and Hope" to create positive tones about Refugees moving from Syria.
A theme in From War to America is, be nice to new people, you don't know what they've been through.
One Word to Describe the Text - I would say, Hope. Throughout the story the theme of hope is applied and describes their hope of staying in their old town and their hope of being able to pursue a new life in America.
The mood of the article to me is hope as well. As I was reading the article I began to hope for them and their lives and hope that they would make it out alive. When they came to America i continued to have the same feeling as I hoped they would feel welcome and adjust to their new home.
Three Words That set The Tone. 1) The word, Chaos helps to set the tone of Freedom. It describes what they were escaping from. 2) Challenges helps to set the tone by describing what they had to go through to reach the freedom. 3) Welcome describes how he felt when he reached the United States giving him that freedom.
Third Read - Put it all Together :spiral_note_pad:
Make three inferences about the text. 1)They had to get approved to go to the U.S. "As paperwork was filed and travel plans were finalized." 2)Francois is very smart. "Plans to study architecture or mechanical engineering." 3) Syria is much warmer than N.Y. "This place is cold, is it real?"
Text to Text - This text reminds me of a book I read about a Vietnam refugee that went though a lot of the same stuff he did.
Text to Self - This text reminds me of when I moved schools and everything was new and it took me a while to make friends.
Text to World - This reminds me of all of the stuff on the news about refugees moving to the United States.
Journal Entry :notebook_with_decorative_cover:
The quote applies to the article because it describes the Strength (For the Jacob family, the sounds of gunfire and explosions became routine.) required to adjust to new things in their homes, the courage (We didn't have time to think, we just ran) required to escape, and the victory (It's been three years since they moved to the United States, and Cedric is about to start 11th grade.) to make it to the new place.
First Read - Get the Gist! :star:
The main idea of the article is, Brothers become refugees as they flee from Syria and move to America.
Three Sentence Summary: Two brothers flee from the Syrian Civil War. They move to America after their uncle invites them. They feel welcome and thrive in the American community.
3 Shocking or Interesting Things from the Article. I found it interesting that they chose to stay in the city for a little longer than they could have. I find it interesting that they became acustomed to America so quickly. I find it shocking that they found distractions like playing video games. I thought that that may have increased the stress.
2 Questions: 1- What did they eat when food and money became scarce? 2- Was it hard to adapt to the American society and how did he do good in school without english?
New Words - Embroiled (Involved deep in a conflict or fight) Humanitarian (Concerned or Hope to promote human welfare.)
