RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES
:zap:
Biofuel
:cow:
Uses
Transport and electricity generation
Advantages
They are carbon-neutral
They are reliable as crops take a relatively short time to grow and different crops can be grown all year
Disadvantages
Refining biofuels is expensive
Large areas of land are needed to grow the crops, which can be at the expense of food crops
Clearing land to make space to growing biofuels can cause habitat loss
The decay/burning of vegetation releases greenhouse gases
Biofuel energy is produced by burning plant products or animal dung
Wind
:leaves:
Wind power is produced when a wind turbine turns, which powers a generator
Uses
Electricity generation
Advantages
No pollution
No fuel cost
Minimal running costs
Disadvantages
Does not provide a constant source of energy, wind speed can be too high or too low
They are noisy
They spoil views
Impossible to increase supply when there is extra demand
Hydroelectricity
:ocean:
Hydroelectricity uses falling water to produce energy
Uses
Electricity generation
Advantages
No pollution
Very reliable (unless there is a drought)
No fuel costs/minimal running costs
Disadvantages
Requires areas to be flooded, which can destroy habitats
Rotting vegetation caused by flooding valleys releases greenhouse gases
High initial costs
Can provide immediate response to increased demand
Geothermal
:volcano:
Geothermal energy is generated from thermal energy stores underground
Uses
Electricity generation and heating
Advantages
Reliable
Little environmental damage done
Disadvatages
High initial cost in comparison to energy produced
Only available in a few locations
Tidal
:droplet:
Tidal power uses the Sun and Moon's gravity to produce energy
Uses
Electricity generation
Advantages
No fuel costs
Minimal running costs
A bit reliable as tides happen twice a day
No pollution
Disadvantages
Variations in tide height affect energy output
High initial cost
Can alter habitats and prevent boast access
Solar
:sunny:
Solar power uses the Sun's energy to produce power
Uses
Electricity generation and some heating
Advantages
No pollution
No fuel costs
Minimal running costs
Disadvantages
Dependant on light intensity
High cost in relation to power output
You can't increase power output in extra demand
High initial costs
Wave Power
:ocean:
Wave power uses wave powered turbines to power a generator
Uses
Electricity generation
Advantages
No pollution
No fuel costs
Minimal running costs
Disadvantages
Can damage marine habitats
Can be a hazard to boats
Unreliable since it depends of waves
