Supporting Struggling Students
signs a student may have special needs
speech difficulties
student gets upset or frustrated often
difficulty learning new words
trouble interacting with peers
difficulty understanding or answering questions
difficulty staying focused and paying attention
trouble with memorization
unable to follow multiple directions
slow to learn new skills, only want to learn one way to solve a problem
struggling with organization and self-esteem
process after student shows signs
evaluate the student: ask parents and other teachers to think of alternate strategies
use alternate strategies for teaching
re-evaluate the student's progress
if no progress, call in the Child Study team
do a series of tests on the student
if student qualifies, think of a special plan based on the student's specific needs
make sure everyone is on board and aware of the plan
implement the plan
re-evaluate the student
Differentiation Techniques
assessments: tests, rubrics, portfolios, performances, oral answers to questions
assistive technology: use educational software programs
collaborative activities: closely monitor the groups
cooperative learning: small cooperative groups
explicit modeling: teach note-taking, project-planning, time-management, how to make connections among ideas
feedback: give students feedback
graphic organizers: timelines, maps, t-charts, venn diagrams, concept maps, cause & effect charts
leveled reading materials: themed reading materials but on different levels
modified directions: clear and concise directions
multi-sensory approach: different ways to introduce new material
peer tutoring
visual component: use flashcards and pictures
prior knowledge: link new presented knowledge to previous understanding
Intervention Strategies
group learning: other students explain concepts
peer tutors: peer tutors from other higher grades with a better mastery of subject matter
organizational skills: teach them how to write assignments in a book, learn to study effectively (quiet study habits), and the ability to stay focused
challenging assignments: have a challenging curriculum
differentiated instruction: illustrations and models
